Rehabilitation centre for Black howler monkeys "Refugio del Monos Caraya"

For over 12 years the centre has been working with the species Alouatta Caraya (howler monkey or caraya), which inhabits the forests and jungles of Northeast Argentina.

The howler monkey is the loudest land animal.
The howler’s call can be heard up to three miles (4.8km) away.
They live in the tops of trees in organised groups of between 3 and 20 individuals and eat mainly leaves.

Their number is decreasing continually, because of the loss of their jungle habitat due to lumbering and fire clearance for fields and plantations.

Black howler monkey babies are caught for the illegal pet trade. To catch a baby, many members of the monkey group, who wanted to protect their youngs, are killed, too.

The babies were sold and held as "pet" often under the worst conditions. A monkey baby can only survive when it is cared for like a human baby. But then it learns to act like a human and forgets how to behave like a monkey.

Very often their owners want to get rid of their "pet" monkeys after a while, especially when the monkeys get too big and aggressive.

The lucky ones of these Black howler monkeys find their way into the rehbilitation centre. The program of the centre consists of various stages of physical, psychological and social rehabilitation; that is, "we teach the monkeys to be monkeys again".

The howler monkeys are united in groups and can roam free on the refuge grounds in tree groups and a small forest. But they still have to be fed everyday, because the food amount and variety of the environment wouldn't be sufficient as it is not their natural jungle habitat.

Therefore we are collecting donations to buy a big enough terrain with jungle in the the province of Chaco and create there a rehabilitation area in which the monkeys will be able to live completely on their own, independent of human support. Then they will be really free again...

With your donation you can help the howler monkeys to get closer to this future. If you wish that your donation is exlusively send to the Black howler monkey centre, please use the keyword " howler monkey" when you donate.

Additional we try to find a reliable and upright investor and partner, who would buy 300-500 hectares of land or more in Chaco and leave it to the howler monkey project for ever. If you are interested, please contact us.
